ARTIST STATEMENT

While learning the art of painting from my mother I puttered within the realm of realistic wildlife art and commissioned pieces as requested.

The majority of my current work is created using fluid acrylic pour technique, whereby acrylic paint is mixed with a “pouring medium” (in my case Flood Floetrol latex paint additive) to give the paint fluidity, allowing it to mix and form shapes as it will, once the colors are combined within a pouring vessel and then applied to a canvas by pouring it onto the canvas, flipping the vessel upside down all at once, dragging the design using tools, etcetera.

In some instances there are small 3D elements achieved with acrylic modeling paste and / or "dried pour skins" added as in "Lots of Jelly"  and "Where is the Panchen Lama?".

Listen -24" x 48" - © 2018

Fluid Acrylic Pour with Artistic Intention  and Neon Fluorescent colors INCLUDED

"Listen" evolved as a large fluid acrylic painting was drying.  The full figure formed as the volumes of paint were drying and pulling the colors in different directions.  The face was immediately recognizable but rather dark against the background and in need of definition.  As I worked on the form definition and outlines already present for the face I realized that the figure was shouting.  That fact became the main focus of the piece with the remainder of the figure left untouched.  An additional figure of a woman developed in a vignette formed by the scarf behind her head, appearing to roam freely along a mountain path.  A dream of what freedom could have been like or what once was?

Where is the Panchen Lama? - 20" x 10" - © 2018

mixed methods

“Where is the Panchen Lama?” was created using a planned fluid acrylic pour landscape background, “skins” from run off of other pours form the prayer flags and monks’ clothing and acrylic paint to define the scene.  This was an intentional piece created to draw attention to the fact that *after his selection, the official 11th Panchen Lama, Gedhun Cheokyi Nyima,  recognized by the Tibetan Government in Exile, has not been seen since May 17, 1995 after being taken into what the People’s Republic of China government described as protective custody.

In 1961 I was born into a humble family of artists, pioneers, musicians, historians, authors and publishers, all of whom had day jobs.

I learned the art of acrylic painting under the private tutelage of my mother, a published painter and author, and accepted notes and critiques on simple drawing from my paternal grandfather, a noted folk artist with a work in the Smithsonian.

A few study pieces and  first finished works were created in the early 1990's, including private commissions.  During this period my own individual methods and styles were realized and a declaration issued from my mother that her own abilities had been surpassed.

The year 1995 brought the birth of my only child, launching a 23 year hiatus from art, and only now reemerging into the art world in 2018.
